Without doubt one of the most exciting times in anyone's life is the introduction of a new puppy. Unfortunately i see everyday that most people just aren't prepared of what's to come. Excitement can quickly lead to anxiety and stress and peoples lives can literally be turned upside down. I see clients everyday that have had a new puppy for only a few weeks and are at breaking point.
The things that I see that set people up for failure when it comes to new puppies are:
1-Puppy School- I don't do Puppy School as I believe 1 on 1 training for puppies is way more beneficial. Most puppies that I train with behavioural issues that are between 4-8 months of age have been to puppy school.
2-No understanding of the breed- Too many people do not do enough research on the breed or understand what different breeds require or issues that they may have. I understand that excitement can take over proper judgement and there are a lot of influences eg family, kids, social media. I'll give a classic example. A client bought a Maremma Pup and lived on a busy street on a corner block. They got me in after a few months because of the excessive barking and complaints from neighbours. Maremmas are bred to guard livestock so will bark at any noise as a warning to back away from the property. See the problem they had? I could give 100 examples. Do thorough research
3-Thinking that they can find all the answers online- WRONG!
Google "how to toilet train puppies" and you will come up with
1000 different thoughts, ideas, and techniques. That is also the case with most other questions. You can imagine what it's like when 2 or 3 different family members are coming up with different answers. I see it everyday creating doubt, causing conflict and even stress on relationships. In the end everyone suffers including the puppy who is being told all different things. Then we wonder why our Pup is confused and not listening to us. Now don't get me wrong sometimes you can get lucky and what you find works, but generally that then leads to issues later on because you now think it's easy to find all answers online.
At Happy Dog Training, I come to your home to help you set a solid foundation for your pup’s future good behaviour. Through education and support, I help you:
